Why a Deck Needs a Different Awning
A deck awning and a ground-level patio awning are the same product family solving two different problems. Everything that makes a deck pleasant to sit on, the height, the openness, the view, is also what makes shading it harder. Three things change the specification.
Mounting height
On a raised deck the mounting bar often lands at or above second storey level, where the wall is frequently not the same construction as the ground floor. We check what is behind the cladding before quoting a projection, because an extended awning puts serious leverage on those fixings.
Exposure
A deck sits up in moving air with nothing around it to break the wind, so it sees gusts a sheltered patio never feels. This is the single biggest reason deck awnings fail early, and a wind sensor that retracts the system automatically is what prevents it.
Railing clearance
The awning has to clear the railing at full projection and still leave usable headroom underneath. Pitch does both jobs: steeper sheds water better and blocks lower sun, shallower keeps headroom. We set it on site against your actual railing height rather than to a default.
Which System Suits a Deck
Choosing a retractable awning for deck use comes down to one question: how sheltered the unit will be when it is closed. That usually settles it.
Full cassette, the usual answer
Fabric, arms and motor seal inside an aluminum housing when retracted. On a deck the unit is exposed for the months you are not using it, so a cassette is what keeps it serviceable. STOBAG and Markilux both build cassette systems we install regularly.

Where a deep soffit or an upper balcony already shelters the roller, an open system costs less and works fine. Less often the right call on a deck than people expect, but a sensible saving where the shelter genuinely exists.
Open retractable awnings >Freestanding, where the wall will not take it
If the structure cannot carry a wall mounted arm, or the deck sits away from the building, a post supported system puts the load into its own frame instead. It covers spans a wall mounted awning cannot reach.

Motorization and Sensors
A deck awning that has to be cranked out by hand is a deck awning that stays closed. Above a modest span we specify a motor as standard, and the sensors with it rather than as an afterthought.

Wind sensors matter more on a deck than anywhere else we install. The system retracts whether or not anyone is home, which is exactly when damage otherwise happens.

Fitting, electrical connection, end limits set, sensors calibrated, operation demonstrated and warranty registered.
Fixing selection is decided on site against the actual wall. Where it will not carry the load we say so and propose a freestanding alternative.
