Smart Controls Included in the Plan

Bromic's Affinity controllers dim electric heaters in 1% steps and come in 1, 2, and 5 channel versions, so you can put different areas of the patio on their own zone. Control is through the free Bromic app over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, with Alexa and Google voice support, timers, and schedules. With the expansion board they tie into Lutron, Control4, Crestron, and similar systems. Gas heaters run on simple on and off control, and one channel can switch up to ten of them together.

Start with area

The working rule is one heater for every 10 by 10 foot area. A typical 300 square foot dining patio therefore lands at three units rather than one big one, and even coverage from several heaters always beats a single hot spot.

Size up, not down

In our climate we usually specify the most powerful model in whichever series you choose, as long as the panel allows it. A dimmer lets you turn a strong heater down, but nothing lets you turn a weak one up, and the installation cost is nearly identical either way.

Then the power

Every Bromic electric heater runs on 240V or 208V, never a standard 110V outlet. Mounting height matters too: 8 to 9 feet is the sweet spot and 10 feet is the practical maximum. We check your electrical service before promising anything.

In BC, fixed gas heaters must be installed by a licensed gas contractor with a Technical Safety BC permit, and hardwired electric heaters need a licensed electrician. We coordinate all of it.

Salt Air Needs Marine Grade

Waterfront properties in West Vancouver, White Rock, and the Islands are hard on ordinary stainless steel. Bromic builds a Marine version of the Platinum Electric in 316 marine-grade stainless, the same alloy used on boats, so the finish survives salt air that would pit a standard heater.

It is the same heater in every other respect, in 2300, 3400, and 4500 watt sizes, black or white. If your project is on the water, this is the version we will quote.

Vancouver's patio culture is real, but so is the seven-month wet season. For homeowners, radiant heat is the difference between admiring the patio from the kitchen and actually sitting on it. For restaurants, every heated table in December is revenue that didn't exist before.

The City of Vancouver also has specific rules for heaters on sidewalk patios, from minimum heater heights to where propane can sit and what can't go under an umbrella. We design layouts that work with those rules, not against them.

It comes down to what's above the heater. Under fabric awnings, covered patios, and enclosed spaces, electric is the answer, because it needs less clearance, produces no emissions, and needs no ventilation. Gas earns its keep on big open patios where you want maximum heat per dollar. Most restaurant projects end up using both.

Can a heater go under my awning or pergola?

Yes, with the right model at the right distances. Every Bromic family has its own clearance requirements, so we spec each install directly from the manufacturer's installation manual for that exact model. Bromic's electric Platinum line is designed for exactly this, and can even recess flush into a louvered pergola or soffit.

Do I need a permit to install a patio heater in BC?

Fixed gas heaters must be installed by a licensed gas contractor under a Technical Safety BC permit, and hardwired electric heaters need a licensed electrician. Portable propane units don't need a permit at home, though restaurants on City of Vancouver sidewalk patios have specific rules about heater height and propane storage. Which Bromic range should I choose?

Can Bromic heaters be recessed into a ceiling?

Platinum and Tungsten electric models can. Platinum has a low-clearance recess kit with a built-in cooling fan that allows a genuinely flush, zero-clearance install, which is what we use in louvered pergolas and soffits. Tungsten's recess kit needs a deeper cavity. Cobalt has no recess kit, and recessing needs a flat ceiling rather than a vaulted one.
