Somfy and Gaposa are the two motor brands we install most often. Both are tier-one products, but they differ in ecosystem, smart-home integration, and typical pricing. This guide helps you pick between them.

Let's start here: neither brand is a mistake. Both produce reliable, long-warrantied tubular motors that will outlast most of what they drive. The question isn't which is 'better' in the absolute — it's which ecosystem fits your project.
Somfy is the global market leader in tubular motors and has the largest third-party smart-home integration ecosystem. If you want your shades, awnings, and roll shutters to integrate cleanly with Alexa, Google Home, Apple HomeKit (via compatible bridges), Control4, Crestron, or an existing Somfy-based system in the house, Somfy is the path of least resistance.
Gaposa is an Italian manufacturer with a strong reputation in Europe and a growing presence in North America. Motors are mechanically excellent and typically priced competitively versus Somfy.
A practical shortcut:
The motor itself is just the actuator. The automation value comes from sensors that operate the shade automatically:
Quality tubular shade motors from Somfy and Gaposa are typically warrantied for 5–7 years and often deliver 15–20 years of real-world service when properly installed. The motor is generally not the failure point over the lifespan of the shade.
Usually yes — adding a compatible smart-home hub (e.g., Somfy TaHoma) or bridge can bring existing motorized shades onto a smart-home platform without replacing the motor. Compatibility depends on the specific motor and protocol; confirm with your installer.
For anything over 12 ft wide, motorization is effectively required because manual operation is inconvenient and stresses the hardware. For smaller units, motorization adds cost but enables automation (wind/sun sensors) that significantly extend the product's useful life and comfort.
